The Oregon Bariatric Center at Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend had its fve-year anniversary in May. Since its opening in 2006, more than 600 people have completed surgical weight-loss procedures there.

In February, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made one type of weight-loss surgery—the Lap-Band adjustable gastric banding system—available to more patients. People with body mass index measurements lower than the previous limit may now qualify if they also have one or more obesity-related, life-threatening conditions, such as high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes.

Surgeons at Sacred Heart perform the Lap-Band and other weight-loss procedures laparoscopically, which results in a better cosmetic outcome, a shorter hospital stay and lower overall complication rates. has joined PeaceHealth Medical Group’s Dexter clinic as a family nurse practitioner. She received a bachelor of science degree in nursing before completing a master of science degree in the family nurse practitioner program at OHSU. She comes to PeaceHealth Medical Group with more than 10 years of experience in emergency department nursing.

has joined PeaceHealth Medical Group’s Barger Medical Building as a family medicine physician. She recently moved to the area from Fairfax, Va., where she worked as a family medicine physician. She attended medical school at the Instituto Tecnológico de San Domingo in the Dominican Republic and completed her residency at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Wallis speaks Spanish and French and has a working knowledge of Arabic. Her areas of interest include depression, anxiety, and women’s and children’s health.

Workman, MD

has joined PeaceHealth Medical Group’s Downtown Eugene clinic as a family medicine physician. She comes to Eugene from Tallahassee, Fla., where she completed the Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare family medicine residency program.

She attended medical school at the University of the West Indies in Barbados and did her postgraduate internship with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados. Her medical interests include women’s health, dermatology, diabetes, hypertension and preventive medicine.

has joined PeaceHealth Medical Group at the Downtown Eugene clinic as a psychiatrist. She attended medical school at George Washington University and completed a residency program at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in 2009 and a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry in September 2010.

She is board-certifed in general psychiatry with subspecialties in geriatric psychiatry and women’s mental health.

Married with a toddler son, Dr. Ardans enjoys gardening, traveling, hiking and knitting.
